3 Famous People From Somerset
Somerset is a huge place but it still has its fair share of famous people who hail from the Southern county.
As well as our fantastic range of conservatories, windows, orangeries and many other things, we’re going to list some of the most famous people to come out of Somerset. Let us know what you think.
James Purefoy
Born and bred in Somerset, Purefoy had a somewhat, different childhood. He left school at 16 and went on to work a number of different hobs including working on a pig farm.
He returned to college at 18 to do his A-Levels, one of which was drama and the rest, as they say, is history. He went on to star in ‘A Knight’s Tale’ alongside the late Heath Ledger which made a staggering $117,487,473 at box office.
He then went on to star in other box office hits like Disney’s 2012 hit John Carter and he had the lead role in a movie called Solomon Kane for which Purefoy received many fans for his acting. He also starred in 2002 movie Resident Evil.

Jenson Button
Born in Frome, Somerset, Jenson Button is a household name in Formula 1. Winning the Formula 1 World Championship in 2009 with the Brawn racing team, a year after his soon to be partner at McLaren, Lewis Hamilton.
Jenson began karting at the age of eight after his dad, former Rallycross driver, John Button bought him his first kart. He had an astonishingly successful start in karting. In 1989 at the age of 9 he came first in the British Super Prix and he also went on to win the Ayrton Senna Memorial Cup in 1997 and he also became the youngest driver ever to win the European Super A Championship.
He went on to become Britain’s youngest ever Formula 1 driver after securing a place on the Williams team for the forthcoming season in the year 2000. He then joined a further five teams before Honda got bought out by Brawn GP, the team he would go on to win the World Championship with.
He now drives with the McLaren team and has done since 2010.

John Cleese
Arguably the most famous of our three, John Cleese is an actor, comedian, writer and film producer and possibly one of the most famous British actors ever.
He was born in 1939 in Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset and hit the big time in the late 1960s as he became a member of Monty Python, the travelling comedy troupe who are responsible for the four Monty Python films: “And Now for Something Completely Different”, Monty Python and the Holy Grail”, “Life of Brian” and the “Meaning of Life”.
In the mid-1970s he and his then wife, Connie Booth, co-wrote and starred in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers, which after only two series came to an end. The show went on to receive a number of BAFTAs in the 70s and 80s after initially receiving some poor reviews.
