Double Glazing vs Triple Glazing
One of the most popular questions we get asked by customers is “should I buy double glazing or triple glazing?” It’s virtually impossible for us to give a definitive answer as it very much depends on several factors.
You should assess each of these factors before making a final decision as they’ll help you identify which of the two will be your best solution. The factors we speak of are as follows:
U-Values
A U-value measures the insulating qualities of a material – the lower the U-value, the greater the insulation provided, the higher the U-value, well, you know the rest.
The average UPVC triple glazed window has a U-value of only 1.0 W/m²k. This makes it 40% more thermally efficient than a standard “A” rated double glazed window and 60% more thermally efficient than a standard “C” rated double glazed window.
Sound Insulation
It is often claimed by some window and door specialists that triple glazing has excellent sound reducing qualities, ideal for householders living close to a noisy main road or airport. This is not entirely true.
A triple glazed window will only supply an exceptional amount of sound insulation if the pieces of glazing used are of differing thicknesses as air can travel through a solid easier than through air. However, a typical triple glazed product will have glass and cavities of the same thickness.
The unit must also be properly sealed in order for the window to supply any significant noise reduction.
Cost
Finances will dictate the decision for many window buyers and although triple glazing is a little more costly than double glazing, the price difference between the two is relatively small.
You should also consider the money you will save during the lifespan of any double or triple glazed windows as you can expect to recoup your investment and earn more on top of that.
Security
The top priority for anyone in the market for replacement windows should be to source secure windows as their primary purpose is to protect your home from intrusion.
UPVC and aluminium are the materials we use to craft our double and triple glazed windows and they’re highly durable. They both also come with a multi-locking mechanism that’s incredibly hard to break when locked.
The extra pane of glass you get in a triple glazed window will add an extra barrier between home and the outside world.
