How To Organise Your Conservatory For The Summer Months

It’s been a scorching start to the summer, except for the odd thundery spell. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the weather will be just as hot and sunny for the next few months, seeing as so many of us will be holidaying at home.

If you are planning to have a ‘homecation’ and you have a conservatory, you’re in the lucky position of having an extra space to enjoy holiday activities in. But is your conservatory at all usable in summer or does it get far too hot?

It’s no sweat making it summer-ready if it feels like an oven when it’s baking outside.

An overheating problem often stems from the roof. Traditional glass and polycarbonate roofs do an ineffective job of keeping out excess heat because they have very outdated glazing. What can be done about that is to remove your current roof in exchange for a solid tiled roof system – the UltraRoof 380 is one of the best solid roofing systems.

This lightweight tiled / slate covering can be custom-made for your extension so that it fits perfectly, and it will better insulate the space, in all weathers. Roof windows that you can open can be added to most solid roofs if you want further ventilation, which you can also get by incorporating French, patio or bi-folding doors into one of the most suitable facets of the extension.

On those really stuffy days, you can leave your chosen door ajar to let some fresh air in, and this will also open out the extension, helping to bring the outdoors indoors.

Do you get too much glare from the sun when in the conservatory? You need some window and door coverings and Venetian, Pleated or Roller blinds are your best option to shut it off.

So that you don’t pine for your garden too much when the rain stops you using it, bring some greenery (plants) into the extension.

Gardeners’ World Magazine has drawn up a list of what they regard as being the 10 best plants for conservatories:

  • Mandevilla
  • Bougainvillea
  • Hoya
  • Plumbago
  • Sarracenia
  • Lapageria
  • Strelitzia
  • Hymenocallis
  • Aristolochia
  • Cacti and succulents

Once your plants are in place, your final task should be to remove any thick textures from any furniture you have in your conservatory and store them away for the winter. Cover your sofa and chairs with lighter textures, possibly with a floral-patterned design to establish a summery feel inside.
