There’s a number of different stained glass windows around the world. Some of which are more impressive than others. I mean, there’s some pretty shoddy efforts and some things that you just don’t expect to see in a church.
While it’s not something that we actually offer here at Permaframe, it is something that you can add to your conservatory without any real fuss.
We’re going to list 4 of the most amazing stained glass windows from around the world. These are… amazing.
World’s Largest Stained Glass Domed Ceiling
Preston Bradley Hall, part of the Chicago Cultural Centre, is home to the largest stained-glass domed ceiling in the world.
This ceiling was made and designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, an American artist and designer. He was best known for his work with stained glass and it’s due to this that it’s no surprise he was the one chosen to undertake this work.
The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision
This quite spectacular building was built by Neutelings Riedijk Architects (NRA) and it was conceived as a perfect cube, half of which is concealed as it’s buried underground.
The whole exterior of the building is covered in stained glass windows. These stained glass windows are a little different than your normal stained glass windows, though.
The panels of glass are imprinted with famous images from Dutch TV but what’s more interesting is that each image is only discernible from a certain angle which then creates the colourful effect we see on the side of the building.
Stained Glass Windows of Grossmünster Cathedral
The windows in this cathedral in Switzerland look quite amazing, almost just your normal looking stained glass. However, if you were to inspect a little closer, you’ll realise, if you’re a crystal nerd, that the windows actually contain slices of agate.
In 2009, Sigmar Polke got to work on twelve exquisite windows for the Grossmünster which is one of the three major churches in Zurich. He gave the Western side of the church seven windows where the glass was full of thin slices of agate. The windows also look like they’ve got slices of a tree in them too, which is kind of cool.
The World’s Most Expensive Stained Glass Window
A cathedral of the Episcopal Church in Washington DC is the Washington National Cathedral. It’s of neogothic design and it is the sixth largest cathedral in the world and the second largest in the US.
The cathedral has numerous pieces of art in it and it also has over 200 stained glass windows. It’s one, just one of those stained glass windows that the cathedral is known for, though. The most expensive stained glass window in the world.
The window is called the Space Window. It’s honouring man’s landing on the moon and it has a piece of lunar rock as its centre which was donated by an astronaut from the Apollo 11 shuttle, Michael Collins.
