How To Bring Your Porch Into The 21st Century
An often underappreciated area of the house is the porch which we regularly use for storing all those jackets, hats, shoes, scarves and other pieces of clothing. Without it, many properties would become overly cluttered.
Generally, porches are integrated into the front of a building, but it is not uncommon for them to also be found at the side or rear of a house where they’ll have an equally striking visual impact, or at least they should do.
Keep in mind that your porch might be one of the first things that people see when they come to visit, so it needs to have some sort of “wow” factor.
If that “wow” factor is currently lacking, it won’t take much to get it looking ultra-impressive…
Replace the existing roof for a solid roof
A lot of traditional porches have a translucent roof and they deliver a very low standard of thermal efficiency, plus they very quickly age.
This can usually be replaced with ease with a solid roof covering. Solid roofs are made up of aesthetically pleasing lightweight tiles / slates and have the insulating qualities needed to keep it comfortable.
Get some plants in and around your porch
The size of your porch will dictate what you can and do in terms of accessorising it, but if there’s enough space inside you could always add a floor plant or two to give it some colour and a sensational smell.
To draw people’s attentions towards the porch think about fitting a couple of hanging baskets either side of the door filled with vibrant Begonias, Fuchsias or Petunias. Keep them well watered so that they flourish.
Fit some lighting to it
You can further emphasise your porch’s presence at night by installing some lighting to help illuminate it. A couple of copper lamps on the outside will add a nice traditional touch and you can also buy battery powered LED lights with a sticky backing that you can apply to the inner ceiling of the porch to brighten up its interior.
Permaframe fits and supplies UPVC and brick porches if you’d like to enhance your entranceway. We’ll also take care of any planning obligations if the porch you want doesn’t come under Permitted Development Rights. Book an appointment with one of our consultants to have a discussion about this.
