How To Prepare Your Home For Winter
Although temperatures are set to temporarily shoot up in the region over the next few days, we have already had a little taste of what winter might have in store for us.
How did the inside of your home feel when things got a bit chilly? Did it feel noticeably colder than it used to? If it did the reason why is obvious! The property isn’t as energy efficient as it could be or needs to be.
This is very easily resolved though as there are proven steps you can take to establish energy efficiency where you live. Permaframe is happy to share them with you…
Install modern double or triple glazed windows and doors
Poor insulating windows and doors are responsible for much of the heat loss that occurs in many residences. They also enable cold air to easily get in when what you need is them to keep the weather out.
Get them taken out by a respected window and door supplier / installer (Permaframe of course!) and replaced with the very latest double or triple glazed windows manufactured from an energy efficient material (UPVC or aluminium).
Be smarter with your heating
Instead of heating the entire house, only have the radiators turned on in the rooms that you use most frequently i.e. living room, master bedroom. It makes no sense to keep a spare bedroom nice and toasty if no-one is sleeping in it!
You should also use the timer function for your heating and set it to only come on when you need it most, rather than keeping it on constantly. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can even download apps that allow you to control your heating when out of the house. Another top tip is to turn your thermostat down a degree or two.
Yearly boiler service
Your boiler is far less likely to break down in the middle of winter when you have it inspected annually by an engineer. A boiler inspection is designed to identify any potential faults with the system and check whether it is delivering the necessary standard of thermal efficiency. If any flaws are found it may be best in the long-term to invest in a brand new boiler. Significant savings can be made by upgrading your boiler.
Buy and fit some energy-saving lightbulbs
You may still have old incandescent lightbulbs in your house and they will be wasting you money. Replacing them with energy-saving lightbulbs will be less of a strain on your electricity bill as they utilise 25-80% less energy and can considerably outlast traditional lightbulbs – 3-25 times longer.
