Top Energy Saving Tips For The Summer
Summer has finally rolled around after what has been an extremely odd start to 2013. Now though, the majority of the UK is experiencing some sort of a heat wave and your energy bills will be showing it soon enough.
There are a number of different ways in which we can conserve energy and, dare I say it, cut back. People don’t like the phrase ‘cut back’ or any sort of alternative to that phrase as they tend to start feeling somewhat deprived. Well, with our tips, you won’t feel like you’re being deprived.
There are a number of small changes that can be made and as we all know thanks to Tesco, every little helps!
Keeping Cool
Okay, okay. Not really the best way to start a post that is about energy saving tips but if you don’t have air conditioning in your house, as most houses in the UK don’t then we’ve a few tips to help keep you nice and cool on these hot summer days.
Keeping your blinds drawn during the day is a great way to keep cool. When you have them open, sunlight comes through the windows in droves and creates a kind of greenhouse effect in your house. It’s even better if you have white blinds, because, as we all know, white reflects the heat.
You could also invest in some reflective window film. Admittedly, not for everyone but these will also reflect the heat and help to keep everyone inside cooler. However, some people would rather insulate their homes so that when the cool air is inside, it’ll be kept inside!
Now on to the proper tips!

Don’t forget that summer is known for having extremely longs days and plenty of sunlight. So, the normal thing to do should be to turn off the lights. The bottom line is that you shouldn’t need to have your lights on all that often in summer.
You can make the most of the extra light in the summer by leaving open your curtains or blinds. Now, you’re going to ask about the heat. Well, you can buy shades for your windows which block the heat from coming in but still let the light in, or you could stick to just opening the curtains/blinds on the windows that are exposed to indirect sunlight.

This is something you may not have considered, but keeping the fridge full is a good way of conserving energy.
If you have a lot of food in your fridge then it keeps the fridge from warming up too quickly when the door is open. This In turn means that the fridge then doesn’t have to work as hard to stay cool, thus saving you energy.

Funnily enough, your dishwasher is better to use than washing up your dishes by hand in the sink. These days dishwashers use hardly any water in comparison to when you fill up the washing up bowl.
So, why not save yourself the time and water by using your dishwasher more often?
