Our Top Tips For Updating Your Porch
There’s no doubt that a beautifully styled and well integrated porch draws extra emphasis to the entranceway of a property.
Guests simply can’t miss the sight of it when making their way to a front door which makes it important that the porch remains in the best possible condition.
How’s your porch currently looking? If it’s at all dated, but still structurally sound, improvements can be made to restore its appearance and performance standards.
Fit a solid roof to the design
An ailing porch roof can be replaced with a solid tiled roof when it satisfies building regulations. To be exempt from the rules:
- It must be at ground level and be less than 30 square metres.
- It must be thermally separated from the dwelling by walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements (or retain the existing doors).
- The dwelling’s heating system must not be extended into the porch. Heating should either be completely independent of the dwelling or be provided with effective controls to operate and isolate the heating from the dwelling.
The lightweight slates / tiles within the solid roof can be chosen in a finish that complements the house and it will be tailor-made to fit the design.
Declutter to create space
You very quickly become accustomed to depositing hats, coats, shoes etc. in a porch once you have one and it prevents such items clogging up other areas of the house. But, has it got to a point where they’re occupying too much space and the inside of the porch looks and feels untidy?
Have a good look through what’s in there and remove anything that you very rarely wear. Donate them to a local charity or try and sell them via an online auction site. The other option is to add some cabinets to the porch to keep it free of clutter.
Fill it with flowers
As people pass through your porch to enter into the house get them commenting about the gorgeous smell of the place by installing some sort of flowers inside of it.
You could install a little bit of shelving on which you can display some potted pansies or polyanthus, snowdrops or dwarf daffs. A planter for the outside of the porch will also transform an unimaginative porch into one that feels so much more vibrant.
