Which Is Your Perfect Front Door – A UPVC Or Composite Door?

You shouldn’t take your front door for granted, but so often, we do exactly that and overlook its importance to our homes.

It’s such a focal point of any property, somewhat governing how visitors and people passing-by assess the look of a building because of how it impacts its character and personality.

If you feel you need to replace your current front door to help it gain plaudits and show your home in the best possible light, a new UPVC door or composite door would be a perfect upgrade.

UPVC doors have been around long enough for most customers to know what they are, but composite doors will be a little less known to some.

What exactly is a composite door?

The definition of ‘composite’ is something made up of several parts or elements, and a composite door is just that, manufactured from UPVC, wood, foam, and a GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) skin.

It has the look of wood due to its realistic wood grain effect, and the GRP skin is what makes it significantly more hard-wearing and water-repellant than traditional timber doors.

The muscle of a composite door is one of its biggest selling-points – tough to the very core and our composite door range is an exhibition of that.

The different components of a composite door

What makes a composite door different to a UPVC door?

The composition of a UPVC door is just plastic-based, while a composite door also has a thicker door frame (most composite doors are 44mm in depth, compared to a UPVC door’s 28mm frame).

In terms of cost, composite doors are generally priced higher than UPVC doors, all down to them being constructed from a series of materials.

Although more inexpensive, there’s nothing ‘cheap’ though about a UPVC solution, which offers above modern standards of insulation and security.

How do you maintain the two door types?

They’re both low-maintenance and only need a wipe down with a soft cloth and warm soapy water once every four months – never use abrasive materials or solvent based cleaners!

Protect the moving parts of the doors i.e. locks and hinges, by lubricating them annually, and do the same with the handles and door furniture if they need it.

Monitor the threshold and drainage holes of the doors for debris getting into them. This should be removed so that water doesn’t get into the seals. In bad weather, keep a regular check on this.
